What Makes a Good Niche?

I’ve started five niche sites in my life with varying levels of success. I’ll tell you what I’ve learned works and what doesn’t.

Growth Marketing Pro: In the marketing and software niche and makes 7-figure revenue per year.
ManlyWellness: In the health and wellness niche and sold to a public company called Hims.
GreatPetWellness: In the pet care niche and makes a few hundred bucks a month. I’m actively considering offloading this site.
CoworkingReviews: Great domain, lost momentum. Makes $0.
GrowthBar: This site! It’s a niche site that supports our best-in-class AI writing tool, GrowthBar — which makes 6 figures (soon 7 figures!).

From my experience, there are five features of a good niche:

Search volume: You probably knew this one was coming, but I’d be remiss not to mention it. If a topic doesn’t have a significant search volume, forget it. But how much search volume is enough? It depends on the niche. If it’s something you can sell for a lot of money as an affiliate (software, electronics, or mortgages), 10,000-100,000 searches/month may be enough. But if you plan on selling a low-priced item (clothing or credit cards), you would want to see millions of searches per month across your topics. Use a keyword research tool to pinpoint search volume in your niche.
Monetization: Think about it. My coworking reviews site is a good example of poor monetization. Even if I ranked #1 for a bunch of coworking keywords, I’d need to go out and forget a partnership with WeWork or call up every local coworking space to find someone willing to pay me for real estate on my site. It’s just not that straightforward. Look for niches with an obvious path to monetization. Hint: look for niches with products that have affiliate programs. If the products you’re selling have existing affiliate programs, it probably works. Also, beware of monetizing with display ads: you need to get a ton of traffic to make them profitable.
Low competition: This is a big one. If you want to rank in Google, you need to find a niche with low competition. That means there aren’t already a ton of big sites ranking for the keywords you want to target. You can use a tool like Google’s Keyword Planner or GrowthBar to check the competition for your target keywords. Just remember: low competition is relative. If you’re going after a niche with a bunch of other small sites, you can still have a hard time ranking if they’re all optimized and you’re not.
Interest: I love my cat so much. She’s perfect. But writing about cat food, litterboxes, and other pet-related content isn’t my idea of a good time. That’s why I lost interest in my pet blog and it stalled. Make sure you enjoy the topic you’re writing about. Plus, if you love a topic, you probably can add interesting insights that will make you stand apart in both your readers’ and Google’s eyes.
Emerging topics: Emerging topics are one of my favorite places to look. For instance, this blog ranks #1 for hundreds of keywords in the “AI writing” niche. That’s because as we noticed the industry started taking off, we blogged about the topic. It’s much easier to rank in an emerging niche since big incumbents probably haven’t tapped in yet. The tricky part, of course, is finding an emerging niche with search volume. Use a tool like Exploding Topics to help.

What Are the Best 12+ Niche Site Topics and Ideas?

1. Survival & Sustainability Niche

Survival and sustainability are two mega-niches you can choose for your niche site and scale forward. Humans have survived since the dawn of time, and as a result, there is an ever-growing market of survival niches.

Sustainable products in the U.S. alone will be between 142.3 and 150.1 billion U.S. dollars this year.

Generally, a survival site can mean many things, DIY, home improvement, camping, hunting, fishing, or prepping. Additionally, a survival niche site could be any link between outdoor survival and sustainability.

This niche is great because it has massive search volume and high buying intent. If someone is searching for gear, they’ve got their credit card out. It’s not like the travel niche, for instance, in which many people are daydreaming about vacations in Hawaii, but not looking to buy anything right this second.

Survival skills are essential. Whether you are looking to get all of your food from the great outdoors or preparing to survive a natural disaster, knowing how to survive will help you in many ways.

You can make a full-fledged website based on Urban Survival, Survival Gear, and Survival Guides – this would be a good idea if you know a lot about a particular type of survival and are ready to teach others.

4. DIY:

People are coming up with new DIY ideas every day, and it is easy for you to get in on them by creating a blog. DIY content can be about more than just making things. Sometimes it can be talking about ways to improve your craft and yourself.

Revenue in the DIY & Hardware Store market amounts to US$596.40bn in 2022. Estimates show the market will grow annually by 3.44% (CAGR 2022-2027).

This type of site would be best if you create tutorials and give step-by-step instructions, including photos and videos.

5. Home Improvement:

People search online to learn how to improve their homes, and this is a great niche to get into, as you can provide all sorts of content to readers looking to improve their homes.

The global home improvement niche was 763 billion U.S. dollars in 2020. With a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of more than four percent. Estimates show the home improvement niche will surpass the trillion-dollar mark by 2027. That’s huge.

Home improvement is another massive niche. There are many ways to improve your home and many things to do around the home.

Home improvement is about making your home more comfortable and functional. It can be simple as changing a shower head to as complex as adding a complete home theater.

Home improvement projects are also pretty expensive. If you’re an affiliate in the space, you can make commissions well north of $200 for every sale.

6. Landscaping:

Landscaping is all about making your outside living space more functional. However, it can also be about improving your home’s aesthetic appeal.

If you go out and start researching all the different things you can do to improve your Landscaping, you might have a challenge wrapping your head around the information. That’s why you must create a niche site in Landscaping.

While this isn’t my favorite niche — I think it’s tough to differentiate and sales are small when compared with software or other high-ticket items — it is a popular niche category.

These mega-niches are vast, and the reason is that there are so many sports and art niches. Some of these niches can be very actionable and profitable, but you must consider what you will write about for your readers.

Hundreds of sub-niches are under each mega niche, so it will take time to find the perfect niche. Art niche can cover a wide range of topics.

These topics include paintings, sculpture, photography, crafts, visual art, modern art, and many more. Let’s explore some of the art hobbies and sports sub-niches.

1. Photography:

Photography is a great hobby and can be a great money-maker if you do it right. When people search online, they look for stock photography, learn photography skills, and other photography-related topics.

The total consumer spending on photographic equipment in the U.K. rose from 2005 to 2021. In 2021, U.K. consumers spent about 2.13 billion British pounds on photographic equipment.

You can create a site that focuses on your photography skills and offer your knowledge to others. You can also create a site to share the latest photography products and help people find the best deals. For example, People search for tripod information and then look at different types of tripods before purchasing.

Additionally, You get on YouTube, share exciting videos with your audience, and link the videos to your site. I like this niche because photo equipment is expensive and only serious hobbyists research extensively.

2. Golf:

Golf is a popular sport; people love to play and watch golf. There are so many things golfers can search for online, and there are also some specific things golfers will be looking for when they search online. It’s another niche I like because — you guessed it — golfers spend money.

In 2022, the revenue size of the golf course and country club industry in the United States stood at 26.21 billion U.S. dollars.

Some topics golfers will be looking for are golf club information, swing instruction, golf ball information, golf travel information, and many more.

Plenty of search volume in the golf niche!

If you are a golfer, then you can create a site that helps golfers learn more about the sport, or you can create a site that teaches people how to become better golfers.

The golf niche can be very lucrative. It all depends on the golf site you create or the information you share.

3. Gaming:

Gaming is a popular hobby, and many people love to play games. Some of these people play games on their computers, and they will go to search engines like Google to find different video games or different gaming information.

Projections show that the Games’ revenue will reach US$208.60bn in 2022. So there’s a lot of money in it.

This revenue will have an annual growth rate (CAGR 2022-2027) of 7.41%, resulting in a market volume of US$298.20bn by 2027.

In worldwide comparison, most revenue will come from the United States (US$54,900m in 2022).

One thing to be aware of in this niche is that games are fleeting. Your “best 10 sports games” article might be out of date in just 18 months. For that reason, it’s a good niche, not a great one.

The animals and pets mega niche is another popular choice that appeals to millions of folks all over the globe. As I said, I even made my own niche pet site!

Covid only accelerated the amount of money spent on pets. In 2022, year-end pet food sales worldwide are forecast to reach 123.6 billion U.S. dollars. This figure would be an increase of about 20 billion dollars since 2019.

Animals and pets are viral, both to own and to view, and many web admins make money off this niche by creating sites that provide information, pictures, and tips on how to care for and train or choose animals and pets.

You have many ways to approach this topic. For example, you can share tips and advice on how to keep a pet, choose a pet, or sell a pet safely and securely.

You can choose any subtopic for your site or more than one to create a niche site. Here are some subtopics that you can focus on:

Writing skills can have a lot of different meanings, and you can share different writing skills or focus on one field: writing fiction, business writing, or technical writing, for example.

This blog is basically a software and writing skills blog. We have multiple posts about AIDA copywriting, how long should a blog post be, and how to write a content brief.

Writing skills are an excellent topic to tackle in this niche, and it could be a great way to get started in the whole internet marketing niche. People are always looking for different types of writing advice, and if you write about a specific field, you can help these people. Plus, with the proliferation of AI writing tools, there’s no shortage of affiliate programs!

4. Tech skills:

People are always looking to learn about new technical skills; you can share various tips and tricks to improve in a particular field or ways to become a professional.

Technology has taken over much of the world and is becoming increasingly important. You can share tips on different tech fields and how to improve them.

The size of the wellness market worldwide stood at 4.37 trillion U.S. dollars in 2020. Projections show this figure will grow to almost seven trillion U.S. dollars by 2025.

There are other health and wellness tips, exercises, and advice you can write about to help people feel better, and you can earn money online by writing about this topic. It’s one of Google’s top three search categories — so there’s no shortage of space for new entrants.

Sub-niches of Health & Wellness

Before you choose your topic, ensure you can provide good content. Content is the number one factor that will help you do well online. In addition, a decent topic can earn you tons of money if you present it properly.

Once you have a topic or multiple topics you feel comfortable writing about and think will be profitable, it is time for you to begin making money online.

Beware: after Google’s Medic Update, many health sites saw huge declines. They really cracked down on misinformation and flimsy science. If you’re going to enter this niche two things need to be true:

You need to be an authority on the topic. Google will want to see that you know what you’re talking about. If you’re a doctor or nurse, go for it. If not, you won’t be able to satisfy Google’s E-A-T guidelines.
Be prepared for volatility. Your site will not be a straight line. Almost definitely, your traffic will fluctuate.
